What is Myofascial Stretching?




Myofascial stretching is the targeted stretching of a muscle within its fascial chain. This type of stretching uses the physiology of the muscles and fascia to cause effect on joint mechanics. The traditional type of stretching most of us are familiar with typically only stretches out the muscle itself. Myofascial stretching, on the other hand, differs in many ways.





Myofascial Stretching:

  • uses precise postures targeting the fascia surrounding specific muscles and joints
  • is mindful, active stretching
  • is a self treatment technique
  • uses sustained pressure and active elongation into restrictions
  • uses long holds (90-120 seconds)
  • stretches and strengthens simultaneously

Unlike passive stretching where you’re relaxing into the stretch which only gives short-term relief, myofascial stretching provides permanent change and re-lengthening of structures.
